Celibration for Chen Again in KC

By: Tim Pafford

I do not know about the rest of you who are fans, but when I found out Bruce Chen was set to be a Royal for another year I was stoked! For me, watching Bruce take the mound every 5th day made baseball fun to be a Royals fan.
I love watching his craftiness and his ability to rack up strike outs by outsmarting batters, and not because he can overpower them.
It isn't as great of a feat to see a pitcher throw 100 mph anymore (though super impressive when one considers the physics involved and the kind of talent it takes to control that velocity.) But we see pitchers in the majors who can do that most of the time we watch an MLB game.
It is a rare sight to see a pitcher hardly breaking 90 MPH who can still constantly rack up 8+ strike outs a game in 6+ innings.  Even more pitcher friendly leagues and ball parks aren't usually this kind to soft throwers (We can look to Barry Zito in San Francisco as perfect example.) But Bruce Chen has found a way to have all his pitches, every game, to know every batter, and to know his defense to find ways to win games other players could not without a 100 MPH+ fastball. But that just makes his unique talent that much more fun to take in as a fan of Kansas City Baseball.
