Royals Give Twins That Sweeping Kind Of Feeling

The stage was set for an interesting baseball weekend in Kansas City. The royals were coming off a win-less six game road trip that took them through Texas and Cleveland. They were in a tie for second place in the AL Central with Detroit, who were headed to Cleveland to play the Indians and they were back in the friendly confines of Kauffman Stadium. They were hosting a three game weekend series with the Minnesota Twins, who had just come off dropping three games to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Both teams were looking to break their losing streaks, and it could have happened for either,as the weekend progressed.

But,to the joy of Kansas City fans,it was our Royals that would be like Will Smith in Independence Day,greeting the alien that tried to climb out of its wrecked ship in the desert, with a knockout punch to the face and a hearty "Welcome To Kauffman!".They would go on to sweep the entire series, and became the first time a Royals team had swept the Twins in Kansas City, since 1989,and extended the Twins losing streak to 6 games, much like Cleveland did to the Royals after our three straight losses in Texas.

On Friday,4/29,the final was 4-3.The Royals had four runs on ten hits, and one error. The Twins had three runs on nine hits and one error. The Royals scored 1-in the 5th inning,1-in the 7th and 2 in the 8th.The Twins scored 1 run in the 5th and 2 in the 6th.Blake Wood (1-,3.86) got the win for KC,and Joakim Soria picked up his 6th save, while Alex Burnett (0-1,4.50) took the loss for Minnesota. The Royals production on the day came from Chris Getz-1 hit,1-RBI, Melky Cabrera-1 run,1 hit, Alex Gordon-2 hits,1 RBI, Wilson Betemit-1 run,1 hit, Brayan Pena 1 run,2 hits and Alcides Escobar-1 run,1 hit.

On Saturday,4/30 the Royals really opened up on the Twins, posting a final score of 11-2.Nathan Adcock (1-0,2.45) was the winner for KC,the loser was Brian Duesing (2-1,2.91) for Minnesota. The Twins managed only their two runs in the 1st inning and would not post on the scoreboard again, which made for a long game, while the Royals scored single runs in the 1st,4th and 7th,and then pounded out 8 runs in the 8th inning. The day's runs came from Mike Aviles-1 run,1 hit,2 RBI,Billy Butler, who hit his 3rd home run, which was one of his two hits,Alex Gordon who homered for his 2nd time this year, had another hit and three total RBI,Melky Cabrera with 1 run on 2 hits,Jarrod Dyson with 2 runs on 1 hit,Jeff Francoeur who had 1 run on 1 hit,Wilson Betemit with the same totals,Matt Tranor with 2 runs on 1 hit,and Chris Getz with 2 runs,2 hits and 1 RBI.

Sunday 5/1 was Faith And Family Day at "The K",and my friends Mark Mansingh,Michael Peiter and I were there, sitting in the Rivals Sports Bar to view the game.We ran across Troy Olsen-aka Royal-Man" there,(check out his site www.royalmanreport.com ) and we next to some Twins fan all the way from Minnesota, and the fans certainly had faith in the Royals. Some even brought real brooms to the stadium,as they came expecting a sweep of the Twins. They got just that. The final this time was 10-3.Luke Hochevar (3-3,5.48) notched the win for KC,while Carl Pavano (2-3,5.84) took the loss for Minnesota.Mike Aviles hit his 5th home run and had 2 runs,on 3 hits and 4 RBI,while Jeff Fancoeur hit his 6th.The Royals scored 1 run in the 4th,3 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th,and 3 in the 8th,while the Twins only managed 1 run in the 6th and another in the 7th inning.

With Detroit dropping all three games in Cleveland on the same days, extending Cleveland's home winning streak to 13 games, the standings in the AL Central as of last night are Cleveland in 1st-19-8,the Royals are 2nd 15-13 and Detroit is 3rd at 12-16.
